Hypnotherapy for Phobias

Let Your Fears and Phobias Be a Thing of the Past with Hypnotherapy

Cheltenham Hypnotherapy for PhobiasAccording to the Royal College of Psychiatrists, phobias affect 1 in 10 of us at some point in our lives. Research suggests there are over six million phobia suffers in Britain.

There are many hundreds of different phobias the most common being: fear of spiders, open spaces, flying, heights, needles, vomiting, enclosed places, and public speaking.

Women are more likely to suffer then men.

Animals are born with only two fears. These are the fear of falling (not heights) and the fear of loud noises. Our survival is dependent on these fears.

Fear is a natural response caused by real danger. For example, we are all scared of coming face to face with a wild, hungry animal, and fear is a survival instinct, which warns us against certain situations.

A phobia, on the other hand, is an irrational fear of an object or situation that causes little or no danger. For example, Ephebiphobia (fear of teenagers) may cause certain individuals anxiety, but the fear itself won’t cause any danger. Phobias are linked to our subconscious, and because they are irrational, they can often be dealt with effectively.

The reaction can range in severity from slight feelings of anxiety and discomfort to a full on panic attack and losing control of the situation. You may have developed avoidance behaviours to be able to cope with your phobia but this only reinforces the fear.

It’s important therefore to gauge to what extent fear is affecting you. So ask yourself the following:

  • Is my fear taking up a lot of my time?
  • Do I think about it obsessively?
  • Is my fear forcing me to do things the hard way? E.g. avoiding places, people, going the long way round?
  • Is the fear affecting the other relationships in my life?
  • Is the fear affecting me physically – nausea, hand shaking etc.

Phobias and the Brain

For phobias and post traumatic stress disorder, the memory of a particular incident can be so vivid it's in the forefront of your mind the whole time. This is a clue to how to deal with it, as the emotional response keeps the memory of the incident in the forefront of the mind. Some people play the incident over and over and that reinforces the anxiety. Understanding what's going on in the brain can help things enormously.

Our brain has the ability to learn when new things are dangerous. This has been very beneficial to humans as we have evolved and new dangers have come about. When the car was invented our brain would have learnt that it was a potential hazard.

However, the fear response can become oversensitive and individuals can become overly fearful about things that are not useful to be afraid of. Ultimately the person fears fear itself and this can result in chronic anxiety.

No baby is born with a fear of spiders or of flying in an aeroplane. Any unwanted fear you have is something you have learned.

As a child, most of us learn to be afraid of the dark and then as we mature we learn to be comfortable sleeping soundly with the lights on. So, you can just as easily learn to feel comfortable with whatever it is you fear. Which is where hypnotherapy comes in.

Treating Your Phobia is Easier than you Think with Hypnotherapy

Phobias are part of the general condition of anxiety. Your first Hypnotherapy session will focus on relaxation and reducing your overall levels of anxiety.

Our brain will always refer to previous patterns of behaviour in any given situation. So for example, if you reacted to a spider in an anxious way last time you saw one, then your brain will encourage you to do the same again. Hypnotherapy helps to change these templates enabling you to feel calm and in control of the situation.

I use a very effective process called the Rewind, or fast phobia, technique which has been used by therapists worldwide to de-traumatise people after accidents and to remove fears and phobias.
