My name is Collette, welcome to ‘Steps to Positive Change’. I am a Clinical Solution Focused Hypnotherapist and I practice out of Cheltenham, covering the North of Gloucestershire. I never fail to be amazed at the powerful changes that Hypnotherapy can evoke in each and every one of us!

Logically you Already Know What to do to Get Better…
When we use our common sense we logically know what actions or changes in attitudes will resolve our problem. If you smoke, you know that you can give up by not smoking cigarettes. You know that being over-weight can be resolved by changing your eating habits and exercising more. You know that anxiety, depression and stress respond well to relaxation, positive attitudes and social activities.
…So Why Cant we Always Sort it Out Ourselves?
The challenge is that your problem does not exist solely in your conscious, logical mind and so it cannot be controlled consciously. In fact, most irrational or overly emotional behaviour arises from the subconscious part of our minds and originates from either inappropriate, instinctive behaviour patterns or faulty programming that we learnt as a child. For example, we may have negative thought patterns or phobic tendencies that were copied from a depressed parent. People with anxiety / panic attacks display the instinctive characteristics of our primitive fight-flight response, which increases their heart-rate and makes them hyperventilate. Similarly, conditioning in childhood may mean that we have an underlying belief that sweet foods are a source of comfort or reward.
…Change Needs to Be Driven by Your Subconscious.
Our mind is made up of two parts: the conscious and the subconscious and unless both these parts understand and are in agreement with a specific change we will continue to generate internal resistance to any new way of thinking.
This is because our subconscious is the library of all our beliefs and past patterns of behaviour. It holds the sum total of every experience, idea and thought we have ever had. We are the sum total of all of our thoughts, ideas, perceptions and impressions based on our experience. It will continue to prompt us to respond in a learnt way until we specifically re-educate it otherwise.
Put simply our subconscious will continue to promote past beliefs - even if they are harmful, damaging or maybe just outdated, until we encourage it to follow a new approach. Find out more about the subconscious and how hypnotherapy works.
